The Rat Pack

Because of their rounded shape, redfish are one of the hardest fish to print. Because of their beautiful filets, they are one of the easiest to eat.

Back in the 70s and 80s redfish only had to be 12 inches long to be keepers. We could keep plenty of them, too. This was great fun for us as kids when the mangroves of Pine Island Sound where full of this size fish, what we called "rat reds."

Current regulations curtail this kind of raiding. Now we catch way fewer and much bigger fish, including the one in this painting. Even though it's not really that small of a fish, which you can see in the original piece, I composed it to be reminiscent of those rat-red weekends back in the day.
