Silver  King

Near my house is a place called Punta Rassa. It's known for many things. One of my favorite famous aspects of this place is its prominent place in the discovery of hook-and-line tarpon fishing.

During the 1800s sportsfishermen developed tackle that could handle the mighty silver king. Word spread and anglers from around the world started coming here to give it a shot. Winter residents Thomas Edison and his wife Mina, their son Charles and his wife Carolyn and many other luminaries of the day caught the fever.

The tackle is much more sophisticated now. So are the spotting techniques. I like to fly over Boca Grande Pass, Captiva Pass and all along the Southwest Florida coast to spot the circle-pattern schooling from above.

Yes, they do crowd the docks for handouts and no, they're not any good to eat, but when they're jumping at the end of your line, you forget everything but the fight.
