Gulf Sail

Where we live, the Gulf of Mexico is pretty shallow until you get 100 miles out. Once you cross the continental shelf the depth plunges and the fish change to true bluewater fish. It’s a long boat ride out of Sanibel but it’s worth the trip.

Painting and printing a fish this large is a challenge, but that's worth it, too. It takes at least two people to manage. For all its size, this fish has delicate detail in the tail, fins, gills, scales and especially the bill.

We caught this Atlantic sailfish out in the Gulf of Mexico. My friend was rigged for tuna, lighter tackle than we usually use for sailfishing. It was a good fight and an unexpected high point on that trip.
