Gator Trout

Very few trout are big enough to put up much of a fight, but the fish my friend Paul brought me for this painting was 25 inches, what we call a "gator trout." At this size, they feel kind of like a little snook on the line, which is fun on light tackle.

I've been in "slam" tournaments -- the kind where you double your points if you catch one from each of several species -- where a big trout like this could have made a difference in the standings. Actually, I could have used one myself a time or two but if you tell anybody I'll say you're lying.

In the process of gyotaku, I print directly from the fish, so as long as I have an original, we know the size of this particular gator trout is no fish story.

Nice one, Paul. No lie.
