Reef Candy

"We need something for dinner!"

Here it is, the most delicious reef fish in the opinion of many. Yellowtail snapper are fun to catch, amazing to eat, beautiful diving buddies and one of my favorite gyotaku subjects.

There are lots of double-secret tricks fishermen employ to catch this swimming sushi. Most involve a bucket full of gook used as chum or bait, made up of everything from playground sand to oatmeal to grits, mangled around with fistsful of ground-up baitfish, cat food, fish oil and other malodorous substances.

Whatever works. It takes a foul mess and light line to catch one of the tastiest reef fish around.
