River Snook

Snook are good travelers. During the Spring they swim all the way out to the passes from Pine Island Sound to the Gulf of Mexico. There, during the full moon in June and July, they mate. You can catch some really big snook in the passes at that time, when they are silvery white.

During fall the fish move back up the rivers into the shallow upper reaches of estuaries where they winter. The tannins from rotting leaves and vegetation in the shallow, still creeks color the snook's skin dark. Come springtime the fish are almost black from spending the winter upriver.

I caught this fish in the spring. It was coming out of the Caloosahatchee River and heading back to the passes. The shading of the painting is based on her coloring at the time, and that's why she's the River Snook.
